Working Group 1

Working Group 1: Topics and Charges

Chair: K. Harkay, A. Ropert

Charge: What is the future of storage ring based sources?

Topics to discuss:

1. What ring source parameters may lead to new science?

- low emittance

- time structure

- coherence

- specialized undulators

2. Can we go beyond the present state of the art sources?

- new magnet concepts to further reduce the emittance

- shorter pulses

- improved techniques to stabilise the photon beam

- experience gained from the comparison between tracking and

   experimental results

- innovative injection techniques to cope with reduced physical

   and dynamic apertures

- maximum beam current

- characterizing and minimizing impedance

- flexible optics

3. What critical accelerator technologies require development to achieve the goals of future ring sources?

- superconducting technology (rf, undulators)

- in-vacuum undulators

- magnets

- low-impedance chambers

4. Upgrades of existing sources: what is feasible?

5. Is it worth building cost-effective but lower performing rings?

6. Should we build multipurpose sources or specialized sources?

How might specialized compact sources impact existing sources?
